The Beau Belles, in collaboration with the Department of Gender Studies, Faculty of Well- Being, University of Malta, is producing Stella, a theatre production exploring gender and identity.

Adapted by Neil Bartlett, the story is based on the true-life story of Ernest Boulton, who in 1868 reinvented himself as a woman, scandalising Victorian London by looking for love in all the wrong places.

Set in 1904 and starring Benjamin Milton and Alexander Gatesy Lewis, the play finds Boulton in his final hours, looking back at his life and the choices he made – a life spent searching for the courage to be truly himself.

The piece is a love letter to the past and an urgent enquiry into living in the present and the questions of gender and identity are faced with humour and heartbreak.

Bartlett, who will be coming to Malta specially to see this production, will be taking part in a question and answer session after the first performance today.

The play, directed by Polly March, is  supported by the Valletta 2018 Foundation and the Strada Stretta Concept.

Stella is being staged today, tomorrow and on Thursday at 8pm at The Splendid, Strait Street, Valletta. For more information, send an e-mail to marica.galea@um.edu.mt.
