Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has urged Steward Healthcare to speed up work on the Barts medical school in Gozo.

The medical school campus in Gozo is still a construction site, despite a deadline for completion in a matter of months.

Steward have taken over responsibility for building the school from Vitals Global Healthcare. They have also assumed responsibility for the management of Gozo Hospital, St Luke's and Karin Grech Hospitals, which they will rehabilitate.

In his first meeting with Steward chairman Ralph De La Torre and the president of Steward healthcare Armin Ernst, Dr Muscat insisted that works in the school and across the three hospitals that Steward are now responsible for must move at “a faster pace”.

Dr Muscat said the government looked at Steward Healthcare’s involvement from a holistic point of view. He hoped that Steward would use Malta as its base for work in the Mediterranean and mainland Europe.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr De La Torre said that Malta had a great history in healthcare.

Noting that Malta’s workforce is “second to none,” he augured that the healthcare giant would live up to high standards and be a transparent service.

The media, which was present for the first part of the meeting at Castille, was not allowed to ask any questions.
