Identity Malta has set up an office at Mater Dei Hospital, removing the need for people to have to go to its Valletta office to register births or deaths.

The office was inaugurated by Parliamentary Secretary Julia Farrugia Portelli at the end of a trial period.

Ms Farrugia said that between October, when the office opened on a trial basis, and March, 1,934 birth and death notifications were registered. That equated to 91% of total births and 27% of deaths.

The new office is open Mondays to Saturdays but hours will be extended to Sundays in the future.
