A full-frontal collision between two cars in Mellieħa early on Sunday morning has left one man in hospital with serious injuries.

The incident happened on Triq il-Marfa at around 12.15am, police said, when a 36-year-old Englishman driving towards Cirkewwa lost control of his Peugeot 207, mounted the centre strip and smashed into a Fiat Seicento heading in the opposite direction.

A 29-year-old Italian who lives in St Paul's Bay was caught inside the Fiat and had to be lifted out of the car by members of the Civil Protection Department.

Two ambulances rushed both men to Mater Dei Hospital. While the Englishman was only lightly injured, the Italian man was more seriously hurt.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli is leading an inquiry into the case.
