It was very interesting to read the interview with Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo (April 1).

I agree with many of the opinions he expressed but I fail to understand certain replies. I must admit that I do not possess any extraordinary wisdom and have not undertaken theological studies. However, I was confused, and I write to express my doubts and to ask for clarification.

I refer particularly to the Bishop’s reply on abortion which, according to the interviewee, is not a religious or theological matter. Humbly, and with due respect, this was a surprise to me and has confused me in regard to my convictions.

Ever since we were young, we were taught that God is the creator and giver of life. No one has rights over his own or anybody else’s life. He who commits suicide kills. Abortion is an offence against the Creator.

The fact that life is also a human right, recognised by human law, does not overshadow the theological truth of creation and God’s Lordship over life. Hence, I fail to understand how this is not a religious issue. Perhaps Mgr Grech meant to say that it is not only a religious issue. But only he can enlighten us.

Some disapprove of abortion because it against natural law. Others believe people are free to decide for themselves. In civilised countries we are all governed by civil laws. All human beings are also subject to the plan of the Creator and whether they want to accept this principle or not, no one will change the divine precepts.

I am at a loss to understand why we are not debating theology when we discuss these issues. As a layman, I expect our bishops to enlighten us according to the teachings of our faith.

Theology is the reflection of the Church on its faith and morals. Insisting that such issues do not refer to theology will make the Church’s teachings simply one opinion among others. People will then choose the soft option rather than the truths of the faith that require total commitment.

I am eager to read any comments to enlighten me on whether this is a misunderstanding on my part.
