The Beau Belles will be producing Stella, a theatre production exploring gender and identity that has been adapted by Neil Bartlett. The piece will be directed by Polly March.

The story is based on the true-life story of Ernest Boulton, who in 1868 re-invented himself as a woman, scandalising Victorian London by looking for love in all the wrong places.

Hours from his death, he looks back at his life and the choices he made.

A life spent searching for the courage to be truly himself. Who is he? Stella or Ernest? Both? Neither?

The questions of gender and identity are faced with humour and heartbreak. The piece is a love letter to the past, and an urgent enquiry into living in the present. Neil Bartlett will be taking part in a Q+A session after the first night – he is coming to Malta specially to see this production.

Stella takes place on April 24, 25 and 26 at 8pm at The Splendid, Valletta. There are only 50 seats available per performance and tickets may be booked by sending an e-mail to marica.galea@um.edu.mt.
