The process has started to clear a whopping 280 tons of rubbish, including construction waste from the island of Comino, the Environment Ministry said.

The rubbish carted away included wood and vegetation, a statement from the ministry said. The illegally-dumped construction waste is being cleared at the expense of the perpetrators.

And more than 3,100 indigenous trees were planted on the idyllic island after two sites spread over 18 tumoli were identified.

During a visit, Environment Minister Jose Herrera said the afforestation project was part of an electoral programme which pledged the plantation of a new tree for every newborn.

The minister thanked the workers and underlined the importance of safeguarding the island's beauty.
