The Labour governemnt is inflicting "untold, irreversible" damage on the country, former Labour Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia said in a letter released on Saturday.

Dr Farrugia, now a Democratic Party MP, said it was high time people spoke out without fear of social and professional consequences.

The letter was relayed to the media as the so-called Daphne Project unleashed a new wave of serious corruption claims against members of the government.

Dr Farrugia, a former PL whip who fell out with the party leadership, said he was proud of certain achievements of the Labour administration.

"Yet, day by day, I saw mistakes swept under the carpet, and no ownership was taken of them. Attempts to change course were met by attempts to silence," he said.

He said today he can empathise with those who feel betrayed, the same way he felt betrayed by the abandonment of the historical ideals of the Labour Party.

People turned their backs on the solutions, either out of self-interest, or more often, out of fear

"I remember what it felt like to doubt from the inside - watching a dream crumble, and people turning their backs on the solutions, either out of self-interest, or more often, out of fear. After so long in Opposition, it was easier for most to close a blind eye, as we abandoned humane politics. I understand those today who are scared to speak up, because those who have spoken up have often found themselves marginalised and threatened. The system itself needs to change."

Dr Farrugia said he is speaking out because he wants to change the present political party system which punishes dissent at every stage of life.

"All those of clear conscience must stand together. I urge those who can make a difference to come together to save the country from the collapse of the Rule of Law, and from falling into total disrepute."
