The government’s proposal to introduce the freezing of embryos has caused a controversy, and justifiably so. The majority of the Maltese are against such proposal as it is unethical and immoral.

This administration, although enjoying a substantial majority, has no electoral mandate to put into action what is being suggested. The Prime Minister knows this very well but if, for the sake of argument, he forgot, he only has to ask Equal Opportunities Minister Helena Dalli to repeat what she said in New York some weeks ago vis-à-vis the electoral programme. She laughingly admitted how her party had tricked the people.

The bitter silence surrounding the Office of the Commissioner for Children makes one think and ask whether it is still functioning. The issue discussed is about human beings in their earliest stages. How come, the people are asking, the Office of the Commissioner is silent about it?

Comparisons can be odious but, being human, I cannot help reach certain conclusions. I sincerely believe that had there been the likes of former commissioners Sonia Camilleri and Helen D’Amato the story would have been quite different.

Neither of them would have hesitated to speak up in favour of, and to protect the unborn child.
