The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be teaming up with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra tomorrow in a concert to perform an epic work inspired by the Great Siege of Malta.

The concert, entitled Great Siege, is part of the Malta International Music Festival, which is organised by the European Foundation for Support of Culture in collaboration with the MPO and which features daily classical music concerts until May 1.

It will serve as the world premiere of the work Images from the Great Siege, a symphonic cycle for two orchestras written by the naturalised Maltese composer Alexey Shor.

The two orchestras will be under the direction of conductor Sergey Smbatyan, who founded the symphony orchestra together with fellow students at the Yerevan State Conservatory when he was just 18, and remains its artistic director and principal conductor.

The concert will also see the two orchestras perform selections of music from the ballet Spartacus, written by Armenia’s most renowned composer, Aram Khachaturian.

Great Siege is being presented at the Mediterranean Conference Centre,  Valletta, tomorrow at 8pm. For ticket inquiries, send an e-mail to info@maltafest.eu.
