Shattered glass fragments can be seen everywhere across the rocky beach at Dragonara Point.

For years, the beach has been used by youths intent on fuelling up on booze before heading to Paceville. But while many bring alcohol by the bagful, most depart empty-handed, leaving their empty bottles behind.

Members of a local clean-up collective are now determined to do something about the litter and are looking for volunteers with a couple of hours to spare on Sunday morning.

Żibel members and helpers will descend on the rocky beach at 9am to collect as much glass as they find over a five-hour stretch to 2pm.

"All the glass means the beach isn't safe for kids," said group leader Andrew Schembri, "and it all has to be collected by hand so as to not disturb the site's vegetation."

Volunteers will be provided with everything they need to clean up the site, said Mr Schembri.

"All they need to bring is a friend and reusable bottle for water."

The clean-up is one of several taking place across Malta on Sunday April 22, to mark Earth Day.
