Former First Lady Barbara Bush, the only woman to see her husband and son sworn in as US president died on Tuesday night at the age of 92.

The office Office of George H.W. Bush released a statement, saying: "A former first lady of the united states of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away…"

Bush died at her home in Texas after declining further medical care for her failing health.

Married to President George H.W. Bush for 73 years, Barbara Bush went from First Lady of the United States in 1989 to mother of the President when her son George W. Bush took office in 2001.

Bush is one of only two women in US history to fill both roles, and the only woman to see both her husband and son inaugurated.

Affectionately called "the Silver Fox," and "the enforcer" by family, Bush championed universal literacy during her time as first lady.

Bush was a popular national figure known for her sometimes blunt talk and self-deprecating wit.
