To celebrate the 100th year anniversary of Claude Debussy's death in 1918 the Manoel Theatre is presenting a recital on April 25 at 8pm at the Manoel Theatre. The evening highlights some of the composer's most evocative and iconic piano solo and chamber music. Pianist Gisèle Grima joins three outstanding musicians: Miriam Cauchi (Soprano), Akos Kertesz (Cello) and Nemanja Ljubinkovic (violin) to mark Debussy's musical legacy.

Claude Debussy was born into a poor family in France in 1862, but his obvious gift at the piano sent him to the Paris Conservatory at age 11. At age 22, he won the Prix de Rome, which financed two years of further musical study in the Italian capital.

After the turn of the century, Debussy established himself as the leading figure of French music. During World War I, while Paris was being bombed by the German air force, he succumbed to colon cancer at the age of 55.

Embracing nontraditional scales and tonal structures, Claude Debussy is one of the most highly regarded composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is seen as the founder of musical impressionism.

The programme on April 25 at 8pm includes Préludes Premier Livre (1909-1910), Mélodies pour soprano et piano (1876-1891), Sonate pour violoncelle et piano (1915), Images Premier Livre (1901-1905), Ariettes Oubliées (1885-1887) and Sonate pour violin et piano (1917).
