The Malta International Music Festival is dedicating an evening to Giya Kancheli, a Georgian composer who resides in Belgium and is the composer-in-residence for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic.

Kancheli’s music is closely connected to his homeland of Georgia. Nostalgia and melancholy, as well as sadness over the political conditions in the former Soviet Union and the destruction of the Georgian civil war, mark his work.

The concert will feature soloists Andrea Cortesi (violin), Giorgi Zagareli (viola) and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Sergey Smbatyan.

The programme includes Kancheli’s Chiaroscuro for Violin and Chamber Orchestra, Letters to Friends for Viola and Chamber Orchestra and the world premiere of Instead of a Tango for Violin, Viola, Piano and String Orchestra.

The concert will take place at the Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, today at 8pm. For tickets, log on to www.showshappening.com. For more information about the festival, visit www.maltafest.eu.
