The Centre, the state-of-the-art office block that recently opened for business at Tigné Point, has announced that it has just been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation.

The LEED  rating system, developed by the US Green Building Council, is the foremost programme for buildings, homes and communities which are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. This is the first time the gold level of accreditation has been awarded to a local development, and confirms The Centre’s commitment to achieving minimal environmental impact on its surroundings.

The Centre achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

“We are delighted to receive this award. Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices,” said The Centre’s CEO JanKarl Farrugia. “Rather, it also represents our commitment to make a positive contribution to the environment by developing a healthy, green and high-performance building. There is a growing need and demand for green buildings across all sectors and organisations, and hopefully this award and recognition will encourage others to follow suit.”

Consisting of two blocks connected via an atrium bridge overlooking the historic Garden Battery, which is also currently undergoing restoration, The Centre is the latest phase at the award-winning unique mixed-use development to be completed. The Centre provides 15,000 square metres of office space over nine floors, and a prime and central location with extensive views, both seafront and over the piazza. Set in the heart of Sliema, tenants at The Centre also enjoy a car-free environment with catering facilities and retail units nearby.

This latest project has already tapped into the growing demand for high-quality, centrally located office accommodation and is fully tenanted.

Developed at a cost of €28 million over a period of two and a half years, the project has employed circa 100,000 working days. The particular attention given to the sustainable design of the building led to this prestigious award. Furthermore, the building has been fitted out to the highest specifications complete with a state-of-the-art IT services backbone and centralised HVAC heating and cooling throughout the building.
