Naxxar Lions pulled off a 2-0 win over neighbours Mosta to cling to their slim hopes of avoiding, at least, automatic relegation.

Naxxar forged ahead early in the game. Ryan Grech sent an inviting ball into the box, Djijali Belhadj dropped into onto Jurgen Debono’s feet and the Naxxar product sent a low drive past Andreas Vella.

Insult was added to injury in the late stages of the game for Mosta, when Etienne Mangion gave Davide Mansi the marching orders before Naxxar wrapped up the win with a second goal.

Yuri Messias advanced towards goal before notching the ball into Mateo Bustos’ path and the latter hit a close-range effort which hit the base of the net.

In the dying minutes, Mosta remained with nine men when Kurt Magro was sent off for a double yellow after tripping down his opponent.
