An exhibition entitled The Schranz Family of Artists – A Journey of Rediscovery is currently on at Fort St Elmo, Valletta.

The exhibition, organised by Heritage Malta, commemorates the bicentenary of the Schranz family of artists’ arrival in Malta in July 1818. It features around 190 paintings – the output of four generations of Schranz artists – and explores their various styles, techniques and artistic entrepreneurship. It also contextualises their paintings of Malta and of the many countries they travelled in and painted, framing them within the complexity of the turbulent times they lived and worked in.

The mentor behind the exhibition is John Schranz, a fifth generation direct descendant of Anton Schranz through his first-born son, Giovanni.

The exhibition runs until mid-July. It is open daily at Fort St Elmo, Valletta, between 9am and 6pm, with last admission at 5.30pm.
