For more than 100 children, this year’s Easter Saturday was one with a difference as they joined BirdLife Malta for a day out in nature full of fun-filled activities.

The annual Easter Egg-Citement event was held yesterday week at BirdLife Malta’s Simar Nature Reserve with a record-breaking numbers of participants.

The event, which had been fully booked weeks in advance, included an Easter egg hunt together with other hands-on activities scattered across the reserve such as nature-themed arts and crafts to inspire children’s creativity while also putting their knowledge to the test.

Thanks to reserves, events and education teams, the children also had the opportunity to have a go at some birdwatching from within the reserve’s hides and enjoy bird-ringing demonstrations, led by BirdLife Malta’s qualified bird ringers.

The young and enthusiastic participants learnt all about why birds create their nests the way they do and what materials they use as well as the differences in bird eggs’ shapes, colours and patterns.

BirdLife Malta’s Easter Egg-Citement event is one of the most anticipated events the environmental NGO organises every year and this year was no exception. As Birdlife Malta’s education manager Sarah Brady explained: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for Maltese families and children to celebrate Easter while enjoying the outdoors and learning about the wildlife in the Maltese Islands during the spring migration.”

BirdLife Malta’s reserves manager Mark Gauci added: “Over the past weeks we had an interesting variety of bird species resting and feeding at the reserve, a characteristic of spring when the reserve is teeming with life, so we are glad so many children got to get a glimpse of what our country can offer in terms of the environment when this is afforded proper management and protection.”

Due to the large number of bookings, the event was split into sessions with educational and engaging activities repeated on the hour between 10am and 2pm to accommodate all age groups starting from three all the way up to 11 years.
