There is nothing unusual about tension between a woman and her mother-in-law, but when you are the Queen of Spain, open hostility tends to be a bit more unusual.

Euronews captured a tense stand-off after Easter Mass on the island of Mallorca, which shows Queen Letizia walking in front of Queen Sofia and the daughters to obstruct a photographer as they posed for photographs.

She then pointedly pushes the grandmother’s hand from her daughter’s shoulder – with the princess also trying to wriggle away, prompting a terse response from Queen Sofia. King Felipe then briskly interrupts to break up the exchange.

The tension did not go unnoticed by Spanish media which has been speculating on the relationship between the two. The video swept across social media, prompting criticism of the Queen’s actions.
