The amount of shopping in Malta went up by 11.7 per cent in February, compared to a year before, a considerably higher amount than the lacklustre 1.8 per cent in the eurozone.

This places Malta at the top of the member states which registered increases, with Poland (+7.9%) in second place and Ireland (+7.1%) in third.

The monthly rate - February compared with January - places Malta in third place with 1.5 per cent after Estonia (+2.0%) and Belgium(+1.6%).

The figures released by Eurostat on Thursday show that there have been three consecutive months of strong growth.
