Drivers and pedestrians could only watch on in disbelief as large gypsum boards were hoisted to the top of an apartment in Gżira on Tuesday in what appears to be a total disregard to health and safety standards.

A crane was pictured elevating the boards to the third floor of the building in Triq San Ġorġ, corner with Testaferrata Street.

The picture shows a commuter walking under the structure in the road which remained open to traffic and the public.

"A full truckload of boards were lifted as cars and people passed underneath, unaware of the danger overhead," a witness said.

Residents in the area have often complained about the indiscriminate practices adopted by contractors, amid a building frenzy in Gżira and its environs.
