Spazju Kreattiv is tomorrow hosting the screening of Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts, an alternative Western by Indonesian director-writer Mouly Surya.

Surya brings genre and gender to the fore, exploring Western films’ concern with landscape, violence and journey, while also addressing concerns related to women’s experiences in Indonesia and the wider cultural context.

The plot follows newly-widowed Marlina (Marsha Timothy) who faces a gruelling home invasion by a gang leader. As the stakes rise, Marlina must outsmart her sadistic captor and fight the wider patriarchal forces that bind her, while embarking on a transformational journey.

The 2017 film was lauded in Cannes and was hailed as the first ‘satay Western’ within the film community.

The film, suitable for people over 18, is being screened tomorrow at St James Cavalier, Valletta, at 7.30pm. There will be encore screenings on April 13 and 27 at 8.30pm. For more information and tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org.
