The Planning Appeals Tribunal has struck down a decision by the Planning Authority to deschedule a site known as Ta'Dmejrek, which forms a buffer around  Għar il-Kbir archaeological site.

The decision was taken after an appeal was filed by Siġġiewi local council, which argued that this was a matter of public interest and it should have been consulted.  The environment NGO Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar had joined the council in its appeal. 

Siġġiewi Mayor Alessia Psaila Zammit welcomed the decision saying it was in the interests of the environment. The decision also underscored the important role of local councils.
