Operation Red Sea, directed by Dante Lam, is being shown today to mark Chinese Film Day in Malta.

The 2018 Chinese action spy film is loosely based on the evacuation of the 225 foreign nationals and almost 600 Chinese citizens from Yemen’s southern port of Aden in late March, during the 2015 Yemeni war.

Said to be ‘China’s first modern naval film’, the film has reached a box-office total of $556 million, making it the second highest-grossing film in the history of Chinese cinematography and even the second highest-grossing film of 2018 so far.

The plot sees how a terrorist plot to obtain nuclear materials is hidden under the cover of a violent coup. Only the Chinese Navy's elite Jiaolong Assault Team have the deadly skill and precision needed to take on the situation.

The event is being organised by the Chinese Cultural Centre.

The film, rated 18, is showing today at 6.45pm at the Valletta Campus Theatre, Old University Building, Valletta. Entrance is free. For more information, call the Chinese Cultral Centre on 2122 5055 or send e-mail to maltaccc@gmail.com.
