A commercial section of the civil court will enter into force on April 9, the Justice Ministry announced on Friday.

This is being done in agreement with the judiciary, and after due approval by Parliament.

The new court will hear and adjudicate cases relating to matters governed by the Companies Act, such as bankruptcy, insolvency proceedings, and winding-up proceedings.

A need for it had been felt from within the Courts’ structures. Its establishment was aimed at addressing better the various issues which citizens involved in business structures encountered on a commercial level.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said the government was committed to increase the efficiency and quality of the courts. Undeniably, the setting up of a section tasked with Company Law matters crystallises that commitment.

Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri said the Commercial Court would strengthen Malta’s competitiveness. While reflecting the seriousness in the way the Maltese jurisdiction operated, it would decrease bureaucratic procedures for companies and make Malta a natural choice for investors.
