Malta has pledged €20,000 towards the biggest ever infrastructure project in the Gaza Strip, expected to provide a minimum of 55 million cubic metres of safe and clean drinking water for consumption by more than two million people.

The availability of fresh water in the Gaza Strip is among the lowest in the world.

The political and security committee representative at the permanent representation of Malta to the European Union presented the pledge on behalf of the government at a donor conference for the ‘Gaza Central Desalination Plant & Associated Works Project’.

The conference, in Brussels, was co-chaired by the European Commission and the Palestinian Authority.

The project includes the desalination plant itself, power supply installations to cover energy needs, and the construction of a north-south carrier that will distribute fresh drinking water across Gaza. The pledging conference mobilised financial support of €456 million with the overall cost of the project valued around €562.3 million.
