The Jugendorchester Stattegg, from Graz, Austria, are visiting Malta this week to take part in workshops with the Malta Youth Orchestra. The event marks the MYO’s first international collaboration since its formation several years ago.

Between Saturday and Wednesday, March 28, the string and percussion sections of the MYO will be uniting with the Austrian musicians in an intensive workshop by renowned guest tutors from the Jugendorchester Stattegg as well as distinguished local tutors. This will lead to an Easter concert where the two orchestras will perform together for the first time.

During the first three-day intensive course, both the wind and brass sections will be working simultaneously with reputable foreign and local musicians.

The brass section will be working with Rudolf Korb, Jose Garcia Gutierrez and Chris Spiteri, while the wind section will be working with Catharine Mooney-Zarzo, Harry Cameron Penny and John McDonough.

Both groups will be devising a programme with their respective ensembles and tutors, which will lead to the final concert.

The concert, being held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Salesian Theatre in Sliema, will see both orchestras collaborating and performing together.

The first part of the programme, which will take place on Tuesday, will consist of a repertoire with strings and percussion, conducted by the MYO’s resident conductor Riccardo Bianchi and guest conductor Karl Vorraber.

The second part, being held on Wednesday, will consist of all four groups participating in a joint concert together.

The Jugendorchester Stattegg will in return be hosting the MYO in Graz in July.
