A man who returned to old habits barely a few days after being granted bail was remanded in custody.

He was arrested, along with some other nine individuals, on the weekend during a raid on a Qormi garage.

Clive Agius, 32, from Floriana, found himself back in the dock answering to charges of aggravated possession of cocaine and heroin, as well as with having breached bail conditions.

The man was further charged with failing to report at the police headquarters while under police bail and violating the terms of a probation order and relapsing.

In light of the man’s past criminal record, his request for bail after pleading not guilty during Wednesday's arraignment promptly brought about strong objections by the prosecution.

Inspector Frank Anthony Tabone stressed that the man’s untrustworthy character was sufficient ground for his request to be turned down, an argument which was upheld by presiding magistrate Audrey Demicoli, who ordered the arrested man to be remanded in custody.

In February, Clive Agius had been arrested and charged alongside Antoine Agius, a 35-year old Qormi resident, following a surveillance operation on a Qormi residence.

Officers from the Drugs Squad, keeping watch on the place, had observed a Toyota being driven out of the garage. Clive Agius had been at the wheel.

A subsequent search inside the premises had yielded cocaine, heroin and cannabis as well as other drug-related paraphernalia, suspected counterfeit banknotes, an undisclosed amount of cash, as well as weapons and ammunition.

On March 6, Clive Agius had been granted bail against a deposit of €2,000 and a personal guarantee of €10,000 pending the continuation of criminal proceedings in his regard.

Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace was legal aid counsel.
