Stopping right in the middle of a zebra crossing that is regularly used by pedestrians is not inconsiderate - it is a violation of the Maltese Highway Code.

But the sight of several tourists trying to cross St Paul's Street in Valletta did not deter an Education Ministry driver from stopping his car bang in the middle of the Castille Square pedestrian crossing on Wednesday morning.

As people weaved around the front and back of the ministry vehicle, one irate citizen walked over to the driver sitting inside the car and pointed out that the least he could do was inch the car forward to allow people to cross.

Article 232 of the Highway Code forbids motorists from stopping their vehicles "on or within four metres of a pedestrian crossing".
