I am writing to complain about the footpaths and pavements around Sliema.

My mother and her friend had booked a three-week holiday in Sliema at the Preluna Hotel. Ten days into her holiday she fell on the pavement while walking to the harbour.

An ambulance was called and she was taken to the Mater Dei Hospital where she was treated with the utmost respect and wonderful care. She was found to have a fractured pelvis, a fractured cheekbone and a fractured ring finger on her left hand, which needed her wedding ring being cut off. It was a very distressing time for her.

When she was discharged, she returned to the hotel but had to use a wheelchair and crutches but, at the age of 84, she found it very difficult to manage.

I therefore had to fly out and look after her till she could return home.

I thought we should make the most of this holiday as it was her last one before her passport expires and she does not want to renew it. At the waterfront promenade it was easy to use the wheelchair but there were many problems elsewhere, holes and cracks making it very difficult to manage. Also, many restaurants are not wheelchair-friendly.

The accident totally ruined her holiday. She felt isolated and miserable and felt she had ruined everyone’s vacation.

The pavements need considerable attention before another accident happens.

Finally, we would also like to thank the staff at the Preluna Hotel for their kindness and attention helping her, which was greatly appreciated.
