Multiple Grammy Award winner Steve Vai, reputed to be one of the top guitarists across the world, will hold a masterclass tomorrow at The Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.

Vai launched his career at the end of the 1970s as a transcriptionist for Frank Zappa, until he convinced Zappa of his talents and was booked as a guitarist on Zappa’s band.

After touring with Zappa, he played as a member of several hard rock giants of the time, including David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Over the last years, Vai has been busy with his solo career and also with the G3 tours he has completed with Joe Satriani, among others.

Throughout his career, Vai has released nine solo albums of which the first, Flex-Able was released in 1984.

His perhaps best-known solo album is, however, Passion and Warfare, released in 1990. With this album, on which his recorded the song For the Love of God, Vai rewrote the rules of instrumental rock. His latest solo album Modern Primitive was released in 2016.

Throughout his career, this guitar hero has sold more than 15 million albums and is known for his virtuoso technique and memorable and energetic performances. In addition to his career as a musician, Vai’s touch can be seen in the world of games, films and advertisements.

Alien Guitar Secrets is an unprecedented masterclass opportunity that is being offered by Vai to all music students and guitar enthusiasts. The two- to three-hour experience will see the guitarist discussing music theory, guitar technique, the music business and, most importantly, methods to discover and unlock your personal musical identity. It also includes a question and answer session and the opportunity for a few attendees to personally interact with Vai during a jam session.

The event is organised by PS:music, which is operated by prog music enthusiast Paul Selis, who in the past has brought over The Aristocrats for their first ever concert in Malta.

Selis recently also organised master classes with Cuban legendary drummer and percussionist Horacio Hernandez and also The Aristocrats’ renowned guitarist Guthrie Govan. Last month Virgil Donati’s new project IceFish performed their debut album Human Hardware in Malta.

Tickets for the Steve Vai master class are available on showshappening.com.
