A young Syrian journalist who shot to fame after she documented her escape from her heavily-bombed homeland to Europe is in Malta to host two screenings of her documentary.

Rania Ali, 20, was cheated, teargassed and beaten as she made her way from Kobane to Austria in August 2017.

She caught all this on camera, having been giving a video camera and taught how to film by Norwegian documentarian Anders Hammer, who subsequently compiled and edited footage before getting it published by the Guardian.

Ms Ali will attend a screening of the documentary at Verdala International School in Pembroke on Friday March 16 at 6.30pm, as well as another screening on Monday March 19 at 4pm at the Sudanese Community Centre in Ħamrun.

She will also be meeting and interviewing young people on their views of a multi-cultural society, with the interviews forming part of a global project titled 'Living together'.

The documentary screenings are organised in collaboration with the Verdala International School, the Sudanese Community and UNHCR Malta.

Her visit to Malta is being organised by local NGO Kopin and its partner Terre des hommes Foundation.
