The Ministry of Education is to launch a public consultation on alternative methods of teaching the Maltese language, supplementing the present one.

In a statement, the ministry explained that those currently studying Maltese would see no change.

The discussion would focus on ways how more people could use Maltese and how new methods of teaching the language could be offered for those who do not hold Maltese as their first language or were not Maltese.   

One also needed to consider students who were inclined towards vocational subjects and for whom an exam that was mostly academic was not suitable. 

The ministry said the need to update how Maltese was taught and assessed had long been felt. The purpose of the current exercise, therefore, was to ensure that the Maltese language remained important and relevant
