The majority of separation cases are settled amicably, with only 30 per cent having to go to court, according to a Parliamentary Question.

Responding to MP Ivan Bartolo, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici gave a breakdown of the cases started between June 24, 2017 and March 5, 2018.

This showed that out of 877 cases, only 263 had to go to court, with mediation being successful in reaching an amicable settlement in 263 cases.

Mediation also managed to persuade 49 couples to reconcile, he said.
