A series of activities are being held this week to mark Brain Awareness Week (BAW), a global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. The following is the programme of the activities being held in Malta:
Today from 10am to noon, there will be visits to laboratories at the University of Malta – at the Department of Systems and Control to discuss brain computer interface systems and at the Engineering & Centre to discuss biomedical cybernetics.
From 10.30 to 11am there will be a question-and-answer session with Giacomo Rizzolatti at the KSU Careers and Research Expo 2018 on the theme ‘How to become a neuroscientist’.
At 11am, Prof. Rizzolatti will deliver a lecture on the theme ‘From mirror neurons of the motor cortex to the “mirror brain”’ in room 402 at the Biomedical Building.
Tomorrow, from 10am to noon, there will be a lab visit at the University of Malta’s Department of Cognitive Science to discuss techniques for exploring mind and brain.
Tomorrow at 7pm, Malta Café Scientifique is hosting Vanessa Camilleri to deliver a presentation entitled ‘Sensing autism: the brain in virtual reality’ followed by a discussion led by Rebecca Gorrieri at the Music Room, St James Cavalier, Valletta.
On Thursday from 10am to noon, there will be a lab visit at the University of Malta’s Department of ICT to discuss ‘The brain in VR – illusions of presence’.
On Thursday at 4pm, Giuseppe Di Giovanni will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Motivation and control of behaviour’ in room 402, Biomedical Building.
On Thursday at 7pm, Ċinexjenza is presenting the film Split followed by a discussion led by David Cassar at the Cinema Room, St James Cavalier, Valletta.
On Friday at 4pm, Christian Zammit will deliver a lecture entitled ‘The anatomy and function of the brain’ in room 402, Biomedical Building.
Attendance to all events is free and open to students, faculty members, staff and members of the public. They are being organised by the Malta Neuroscience Network Programme of the University of Malta with the support of the Malta Chamber of Scientists, Associazione dei Docenti Universitari e Ricercatori Italiani a Malta (ADURIM), the Italian Institute of Culture, the Italian Embassy, the University of Malta’s Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT), the journal Neuroscience Methods – Elsevier, Malta Café Scientifique and Ċinexjenza.
