Fireworks factories will receive a total of €170,000 in public funding to improve their safety and infrastructure, culture minister Owen Bonnici announced on Monday.

The new Pyrotechnics Fund, managed by Arts Council Malta, will be open to all fireworks factories which have a valid licence and are registered as voluntary organisations.

Each factory is eligible for a maximum grant of €5,000 to be used primarily for restoration, investment in infrastructure or equipment, safety training, and collaborations with other organisations.

At least 60 per cent of the funds must be used for infrastructure, while the rest can fund current expenses such as police and fire safety for pyrotechnic displays, firing systems and manufacturing materials.

Applications for the first funding cycle will be open between March 19 and April 30, after which a board of evaluators will decide on which proposals will receive funding.

Dr Bonnici highlighted the important work carried out by firework enthusiasts in strengthening national traditions and promoting Malta’s cultural heritage, and encouraged organisations to avail themselves of the new grants.
