Malta’s first infertility NGO is hosting a conference on March 14 in an attempt to break the silence on infertility in Malta.

Organised by the Malta infertility Network’s With the theme 'Supporting the rollercoaster dream', the conference will be held at The Palace, Sliema.

The conference will explore the need of psychosocial education in the subject of infertility and in medically-assisted reproduction. This will enable the patients to have a healthy experience of fertility treatment and would satisfy the need to identify the kind of intervention that is most effective for each couple individually.

Furthermore, the conference will also address the current legislation ‘The Embryo Protection Act 2012’ and the required changes which need to occur in order to reach standard treatment found abroad and improve conception rates.

This conference is a platform that will bring together various experts including Satu Rautakallio-Hokkanen, chairperson of Fertility Europe, Domenica Scicluna,  MA Degree Gestalt Psychotherapist, Prof. Jean Calleja Agius, head of Department Anatomy University of Malta, Mark Sant, consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, special interest in infertility and Lara Dimitrijevic from the Women's Rights Foundation.

It will also be addressed by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Parliamentary Secretary Julia Farrugia Portelli and Health Minister Chris Fearne.

Domenica Scicluna, who works closely with the NGO, said couples who are facing difficulties to become parents due to medical issues, would need to resort to such treatments because otherwise conception may not be possible in the natural way.

For these reasons psychosocial education is necessary, together with professional infertility counselling, as these patients need a lot of support throughout this process.

Diane Calleja Gilson, president of The Malta Infertility Network, said couples struggling with infertility are like other patients that deserve the right to access the necessary treatment that is suitable for their medical condition.
