Government MP Glenn Bedingfield is to be tasked with spearheading a soon-to-be launched strategy for Cottonera, the Local Governance Ministry announced on Friday.

The strategy will seek to improve environmental and social standards in the inner harbour area, with both short- and long-term regeneration goals.

"New recent developments and investments in and around the Cottonera area brought new challenges, and the Government deems it fit that a strategy for this area is needed now more than ever," the ministry said in a statement.

Aside from leading the team which will draft the strategy, Mr Bedingfield will also be responsible for coordinating meetings of the Cottonera Rehabilitation Committee and consulting with stakeholders affected by committee projects.

Earlier this week, Times of Malta revealed how Mr Bedingfield, who is a good friend of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, is paid €42,000 a year to coordinate replies to parliamentary questions, over and above the €20,000 yearly honorarium paid to members of parliament.
