Three people were hospitalised in the early hours of the morning after a car heading the wrong way on Marsa's Aldo Moro road caused a major traffic collision.

The accident happened at around 12.40am when a Renault Megane being driven by a 27-year-old Serbian living in Ħamrun somehow found itself heading into oncoming traffic and crashed into a Toyota Aigo.

It took the expertise and equipment of Civil Protection Department members to extract an unfortunate couple from the Toyota.

The car's 53-year-old male driver and 49-year-old female passenger, both from Swieqi, were badly hurt and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital.

A 42-year-old woman from Ħamrun who was riding in the passenger seat of the Renault Megane was also taken to hospital, although no information about her medical condition was made available. The car's driver was not injured.

Police have opened an inquiry into the case and are reportedly questioning the Renault Megane's driver about the incident.
