The Kappillan in Maltese

Wistin Born

Wistin Born

Nicholas Monsarrat’s The Kappillan of Malta, first published in 1973 and soon earning international acclaim, will, for the first time in almost five decades, be released in Maltese.

The translation had been made by Wistin Born, of Is-Salib tal-Fidda (The silver cross) fame, less than a year after the novel came out. Monsarrat, who then lived in San Lawrenz, gave his blessing for the translation, thus paving the way for broadcaster Charles Arrigo to read it on Rediffusion, the cable radio at the time available in practically all Maltese households.

Throughout all these years, the original manuscript containing the translation was kept under lock and key in a private archive. The translation will be published unabridged and in a critical edition.

The Kappillan of Malta narrates a story of courageous love during Malta and Gozo’s worse moments in World War II. It is also a powerful message intended to hearten those going through difficult times.

Il-Kappillan ta’ Malta will be edited by Mark Montebello and published by the editorial house SKS.
