BIRKIRKARA 2

Grech 47; Herrera 72

LIJA ATHLETIC 1

Kooh Sohna 71

A lacklustre display from Birkirkara saw them earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory over bottom side Lija Athletic, as they continue to heap pressure on both Valletta and Balzan in attempt to maintain their title hopes, albeit slim, alive.

Birkirkara took the lead in the second half when Srdjan Dimitrov managed to slide behind Lija’s backline and rush towards Luke Bonnici.

However, an altruistic Dimitrov, an unusual feature for the deadly striker, notched the ball towards the oncoming Jake Grech as the former Ħamrun Spartans slotted the ball into empty net.

Yet, Lija found a way to shock Birkirkara when Raphael Kooh Sohna slid behind Birkirkara’s defensive line and with a first-timer, curved the ball past Kristijan Naumovski to level terms.

Their joy did not last long as two minutes later, substitute Terence Agius put Edward Herrera in front of Bonnici and concluded with composure to secure the three points for the Stripes.

BOV Player of the match Srdjan Dimitrov (Birkirkara).
