The OECD predicts that many ocean-based industries could outperform the global economy as a whole by 2030 when it comes to creating jobs, Transport Minister Ian Borg said on Thursday.

He said that Europe was now on the road to recovery with the blue economy proving to be a creator of growth and jobs, with an output of over €1.3 trillion, and the potential to more than double by 2030.

Speaking at the two-day Mediterranean Tourism Forum being hosted by the Hilton, he stressed that the country has established its status as a leading service provider, especially in the superyacht service industry.

However, he emphasised the importance of looking at the long-term and sustainable transformation of the Mediterranean as a yachting destination of excellence and said it was crucial to provide the holistic feel expected: a “niche, boutique, 7-star superyacht industry”.
