Alitalia was named the most punctual airline in the world for January 2018, according to a recent report published by FlightStats, the US independent data services society specialising in commercial aviation.

According to an announcement, 91.89 per cent of Alitalia flights arrived on schedule in January. FlightStat’s data showed that Qatar Airways ranked second with 87.88 per cent and South African Airlines third with 87.47 per cent.

The January performance follows Alitalia’s good record in 2017: the Italian carrier ranked sixth in the world among major international airlines, with Iberia ranking first, followed by Japan Airlines (JAL), All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Delta Air Lines in second, third and fourth place respectively, and Qatar Airways in fifth.

Furthermore, in 2017, Alitalia ranked third among major European airlines, with Iberia ranking first and Austrian Airlines second.

“Alitalia continued to significantly improve its operational performance [in 2017], compared to the two previous years. In 2016, 78.9 per cent of Alitalia flights arrived on time, while in 2015 the percentage was 75.3,” the announcement said.

Flightstats follows the ‘A14’ method, monitoring flights arriving at the gate less than 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival time.

Considering that Alitalia has operated over 93,000 flights in the first two quarters of 2017, the improvement of one percentage point means that almost 1,000 flights more have arrived on time compared to same period last year.
