ĦAMRUN SPARTANS        2

Nilsson 65, 85

Ħamrun Spartans ended a poor run of five matches without a win as Alex Nilsson hit home a well-taken brace to lead his team to a 2-0 win over Mosta.

The Spartans had dominated much of the match and could have taken the lead after 18 minutes when Guilherme picked Artur Faria at the far post but his downward header was blocked by Andreas Vella, the Mosta goalkeeper.

On 34 minutes, Faria picked Lydon Micallef inside the area and his effort came off the upright.

Two minutes later the former Balzan striker was again close when this time his firm drive was somehow kept out by Vella.

Thomas Veronese came to Mosta’s rescue a minute from the break when Vella failed to control Espindola’s delivery from a corner but the Italian wingback was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Mosta finally threatened 13 minutes into the second half when Souare played in Bangoura who turned past Zaccardo but his low shot was blocked by Steve Sultana.

The Blues had an even better chance on 63 minutes when Giordano Trovade’s pile drive was pushed away by Sultana, Leozinho was first on the rebound but was again denied by the Spartans custodian, the ball spilling to Massimo Sammartino who was again foiled by the goalkeeper.

Mosta were made to pay for this miss as two minutes later Faria’s throughball put Alex Nilsson clear and the Swede cooly slotted the ball past Andreas Vella, for his first goal with the Reds shirt.

The Swedish striker sealed the points for the Spartans five minutes from time when ran to meet Karl Micallef's throughball, turned past his marker before slotting the ball past Vella.

BOV Player of the match: Lydon Micallef (Ħamrun Spartans).
