Malta has gained a place in the Corruption index issued by Transparency International, ranking 46th out of 180 countries.

Last year it ranked 47 among 177 countries.

Countries such as Italy, Croatia and Greece are ranked after Malta.

New Zealand and Denmark rank highest and Syria, South Sudan and Somalia rank lowest. The best performing region is Western Europe while the worst are regions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In October Transparency international had issued a statement that 'condemned the barbaric murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia who fearlessly exposed corruption."
