Heritage Malta will open the Tarxien Temples, a Unesco World Heritage Site, for free on Sunday February 25.

The Tarxien Temples site is one of the largest and most complex of the prehistoric sites on the islands. Although three temples are clearly recognisable, did you know that the Tarxien Temples consist of a complex of four megalithic structures? 

The four megalithic structures were built in the Neolithic (ca 3600- 2500BC) and re-used in the Bronze Age (ca 2400-1500BC). The earliest of the four structures is located at the easternmost end of the site and was built between 3600 and 3200BC. The South Temple holds the largest number of reliefs in stone representing animals and various spiral motifs. The Central Temple is unique as it has the most complex architecture based on six apses (semi-circular chambers).

Walkways within and outside the temple provide accessibility to all and also provide visitors with the opportunity to view the prehisotric remains from a unique viewpoint. The site is also covered by a protective tent, constructed in 2015 as part of the Archaeological Heritage Conservation Project.

During the open day two guided tours will be held at 10am and 2pm. Heritage Malta’s open day at Tarxien Temples will be held between 9am and 5pm, last admission at 4.30pm.
