Años Luz, a show that brings the spotlight on to shadow puppetry, will be taking place this weekend as part of the Valletta 2018 programme.

AñosLuz, which literally means Light Years, will be focusing on the constant interplay between entering and exiting the light, in front and behind the screen.

Performed by Luz Micro y Punto, it is a story for the entire family, and focuses on friendship in a unique world made of music and colour. Everything will be created and performed live – including the music. It focuses on Lady Di Fusa, a composer struggling to find inspiration for a melody. She wakes from a slumber, and finally finds the inspiration. Upon waking, she starts playing the new score, and this in turn awakens two puppets in a magical bookcase.

Chantal Franco, Patricial Toral and Verónica R. Galán are the artists and performers for this Asturian (Spanish) shadow play company. Patricia and Chantal use analogical technology and different formats which range from traditional and classic shadow theatre techniques to more experimental and contemporary ones. The end result is a beautiful spectacle of images. The performances are accompanied by Verónica’s music – which is specifically written and performed for each spectacle.

Shadow puppetry is considered to be the oldest form of puppetry in the world, incorporating storytelling and which is a form of entertainment. It originated in China and in India thousands of years ago, and spread throughout Europe in the 17th century via Italy. The puppets are held between a source of light and a translucent screen, achieving a series of moving images which in turn create a story.

Años Luz takes place on February 24 and 25 at the Mqabba Primary School, and will also be heading to Gozo on March 3 and 4, with performances to be held in the
Għajnsielem Parish Centre Hall. The Saturday performances start at 6pm, while the Sunday performances start at 4pm. Tickets cost just €5 for adults and €2 for children from the ages of 4+.
