Preparatory works for the beginning of the second phase of the Marsa Junction Project will continue at night between Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 February, along parts of Triq Aldo Moro.

The works along this arterial thoroughfare, which include the dismantling of some of the existing vehicle restraint systems between the north- and south-bound lanes, will start at 9pm on Tuesday to be ready before dawn the following morning.

The road will remain open to traffic in all directions, at all times. However, road users are encouraged to follow the traffic directions and minor lane deviations marked by temporary signs to ensure their safety as well as that of other commuters and the workers on site. Transport Malta officials will be stationed in the area to guide road users as well.

The three-phase, EU-funded Marsa Junction Project includes the construction of new roads, seven flyover structures, pedestrian pathways, bicycle lanes, park and ride facilities and other developments to upgrade the busiest node of the Maltese road network. Through this investment, the existing complex traffic lights system will be eliminated, making way for dedicated, uninterrupted lanes for each of the several routes that converge at this junction.

The first phase of the project, including the demolition of the old factories on part of the site is nearing completion.

The project architects and administrators are now commencing the second phase, which will include the development of several new lanes along Triq Aldo Moro and other nearby roads as well as the building of the underground distribution systems required for water, electricity, sewage and telecommunications services, as well as the project’s storm water infrastructure.

ater this year, contractors will also start the third phase of this project, to construct the seven flyover structures and complete all the other facilities.

This project is co-financed through the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility.
