A man being held at the police headquarters lock-up was hospitalised on Wednesday evening after he tried to hurt himself.

The police said the man, a Libyan, was arrested on Monday following an incident in Paceville.

He started arguing with the officers who were keeping watch and banged his head against the cell gate.

As assistance was called, he tried to cause himself further injuries by attempting to tie his trousers around his neck.

Timely intervention by the police saved the man from further injuries.
