The Florida Project will be screened today at 7.30pm at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta.

This 2017 comedy-drama is a moving and poignant look at childhood. It tells the story of Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), a precocious six-year-old and her 22-year-old mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), who live at the Magic Castle Motel, one of a series of budget motels along the main highway outside Orlando that once attracted Disney World tourists, but now house homeless families.

Moonee and her ragtag group of friends’ summer break is filled with wonder, mischief and adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times from week to week trying to keep a roof over their heads.

The closest thing Moonee has to a father is the motel’s manager, Bobby (Willem Dafoe), a guarded and diligent man who is taunted by the children’s antics but who has a soft spot for his residents.

Halley has lost her job and a new girl the same age as Moonee has moved in at the motel next door – it promises to be an eventful summer.

The film, rated 15, is directed by Sean Baker.

The Florida Project will be screened today at 7.30pm at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta. There will be encore screenings on Sunday at 8.30pm and on March 3 at 3pm. For tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org.
